This Vacheron Constantin Quai de L’Ile Steel Blue is an addition to the stainless steel models of a collection that was introduced in 2008. The name is derived from the crossing place between the left and right banks of the Rhone, in the heart of Geneva, a historical place for VC. And for watchmaking in general.

The Quai de L’Ile collection contains a mix of three gold dress watches and, with this new model, three stainless steel models. Obviously these steel models are much more affordable. Most people have the idea models from brands like Vacheron Constantin (and Breguet, Blancpain, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Ulysse Nardin plus some more) cost a fortune.

The Vacheron Constantin Quai de L’Ile Steel Blue has a transparant dial

Which is partly true. As they all have models like this Vacheron Constantin Quai de L’Ile Steel Blue. Entry-level time pieces, sort of, for prices below 20,000. Steel is cheaper than gold or platinum. Just a date window is less complicated and cheaper than a perpetual calendar. Meaning that the entry watches from these beloved brands will fit the budget of more people.

Don’t think these entry-models, and this Vacheron Constantin Quai de L’Ile Steel Blue have less quality. Inside is the same movement as in the gold-cased version, the caliber 5100/1 automatic with a power-reserve of 60 hours. Only the material of the rotor differs: brass replaces 22K gold.

The Vacheron Constantin Quai de L’Ile Steel Blue features hours, minutes and central seconds together with the date. Which is indicated by a small triangle on a blue rotating disc. So, it is not the date disc, which is transparent, that is turning. And it gives a nice 3D effect. Also, a steel (or platinum, or white gold) case and blue dial always gives a sense of sportiness. Exactly what the rather conservative Quai de L’Ile collections needs in our opinion.
