The year 2023 marks 60 years of the TAG Heuer Carrera and to celebrate that a number of “glassbox” models are released. This TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon Glassbox tops the new models, a chronograph with tourbillon and an updated in-house movement.

Let’s talk about glassbox first. TAG gives its models rather generic names, so talking about a Carrera Chronograph, even with tourbillon, doesn’t point directly to a certain model. You can talk about the year it was released, or use its tongue breaking reference number, but we would rather point this one out as the Tourbillon Glassbox.

Glassbox, or the glassbox design, refers to the Carrera Chronographs from the 1970s that have slightly domed glass, which was hesalite in those days, a sort of plastic. This domed glass creates a nice effect on the tachymeter scale aorund the dial. And that’s what you also find on the new Carrera Chronograph models that are released to commemorate 60 years of the Carrera Chronograph.

The case of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon Glassbox is inspired by the 1963 model

The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon Glassbox is a little smaller than the other Carrera Tourbillons released in recent years, measuring 42 millimeters instead of 45. The case design refers to the original 1963 model, which was a 36 millimeter watch named after the Carrera Panamericana, a car race in Mexico. Mixed with the sparkling blue dial and the tourbillon, it really stands out.

Inside you will find the new Heuer caliber TH20-09. This is a TH20-00 with flying tourbillon complication and the TH20-00 is an updated Heuer 02 with an oscillating weight that offers bidirectional winding. Whereas the Heuer 02 only charged the mainspring if the rotor moved in a counter-clockwise direction. The movement is COSC certified and offers a 65-hour power reserve.
