Montblanc’s biggest recent news originates from its Timewalker collection. This piece is not the subtlest one with a diameter of 50 millimeters, but it does breathe motorsports: the Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph Rally Timer Counter Limited Edition.

Montblanc has finally found its car inspiration in their partnership with the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The TimeWalker Chronograph Rally Timer Counter Limited Edition is inspired by the vintage racing stopwatches from Minerva. Quick fact: the original Minerva factory was bought by Montblanc.

To be even more precise, the manufacture caliber inside (MB M16.29), with a monopusher chronograph, was inspired by the original Minerva caliber 17-29 from the 1930’s. Montblanc also used this movement in the recent Montblanc 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter Limited Edition Bronze.

As on the famous Minerva Rally Timer, the chronograph’s 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock is vertically aligned with the small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock. With a tip sculpted after the Minerva arrow, the red chronograph seconds hand runs in a central position along a tachymeter scale, which can be used to calculate speeds over a fixed distance.

But it is not a complete classic homage. The versatile timepiece has been made a bit more modern because of the black DLC coating on the flanks and its titanium case and satin finish around the case and on the monopusher. The Rally Timer is versatile because it is essentially three timepieces in one.

A chronograph wristwatch on a black calfskin strap. A pocket watch, so it is more handy when you are timing a lap at the pit wall. And a desk clock when you are busy buying a vintage Alfa Romeo on the web. Now you know why it is so big. Unfortunately the Minerva dashboard clock is not part of the deal.
