The Zenith Heritage Revival Cronometro TIPO CP-2 is a sort of a remake of the very popular Zenith Cronometro TIPO CP-2, also known as the “A. Cairelli”. It is very popular because it is vintage – from the 1960s – and there are only 2,500 pieces.

In the 60s the Italian military choose several Swiss watchmakers to equip the pilots of its Navy and Air Force. Zenith was one of those watchmakers, among Breitling, Leonidas, Universal Genève and Rolex. Zenith delivered 2,500 chronographs to a Rome-based distributor called “A. Cairelli” who handled delivery. Yes, Italian logistics. Cairelli, we assume, put his name on the watch and the ones that were really delivered to the navy and air force were engraved. MM (Marina Militare) or AMI (Aeronautica Militare Italiana) together with a serial number and the TIPO CP-2 reference on the back of the timepieces that were taken aboard planes. So there are pieces without these engravings, probably kept as spare at the time.

That Zenith military chronograph was code-named TIPO CP-2 and has a 43-millimeters case ensuring legibility essential for pilots. The model features two counters (in the initial version) and inside is the Zenith caliber DP 146. This caliber was developed by Martel Watch Co., a company that was taken over by Zenith in 1959.

The new one looks almost exactly the same. It has a 43-millimeters stainless steel case and the same chronograph lay-out. The old caliber has been replaced by Zenith’s self-winding El Primero 4069 and you won’t find Cairelli’s name on it. The new one is limited to 1,000 pieces and you know what? We want them both.
