Ulysse Nardin’s history has a strong connection to the marine chronometer and because almost every watch brand desperately seeks for some cool vintage angle, so does Ulysse Nardin. The Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur is a good example of that vintage angle.

UN calls their this Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur a chronometer for a modern era. Nice line, but in fact it’s just a way to get the entry-level clientele to Ulysse Nardin with a bit more modern design than their other Marine Chronometers. This one is lighter and thinner. UN recently did the same with the Ulysse Nardin Marine Chronometer 1846. Which, if you take a quick look, looks exactly the same. Only the case differs a little.

The Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur is available in steel and gold

Besides the design, is has a more attractive price, as the Marine Torpilleur is now available in steel. With either a leather strap with folding buckle or a stainless steel bracelet. A more expensive rose gold version, with leather strap, is also available.

Back back to the more attainable steel Marine Torpilleur. Despite its entry-level price point, it still features the impressive UN-118 caliber. It is the same caliber Ulysse Nardin uses in their other chronometers. Yes, also in the aforementioned Marine Chronometer 1846.

It delivers a 60-hour power-reserve and proprietary silicium anchor escapement. The watch is COSC certified, and meets the strict standards that allow it to bear the Ulysse Nardin Performance Certificate.

By the way, ‘torpilleur’ is French for torpedo boat. A relatively small and nimble ship that carried torpedos to take out much larger destroyers. A reference to the Marine Torpilleur, being the new and more nimble kid on the block. Without the ‘taking out’ part of its older siblings hopefully. A nice addition to the Marine collection and at the same time a subtle facelift to broaden the appeal.
