With the Nivada Grenchen Super Antarctic 3.6.9 the brand looks back at one of their historical moments as the original model was the first watch ‘to set foot’ on Antarctica. It was worn by the members of the American Navy’s Deep Freeze 1 Expedition to the South Pole. Which took place from 1955 to 1956, where they met icebergs, frozen expanses and a latitude of 90°.

The original watch measures 35 millimeter, this retro model is 38 millimeters. And the original Super Antarctic version has a dial with 12/3/6/9 numerals while this Nivada Grenchen Super Antarctic 3.6.9 misses the 12. O, and the brand calls this new model the 3/6/9 in their press releases and 3.6.9 on their website.

The Nivada Grenchen Super Antarctic 3.6.9 is an affordable retro watch

This revived Antarctic is available in two versions; with a black dial and with a tropical dial. (Meanwhile Nivada Grenchen added a third dial: a brown, non-tropical one). The case is from 316L stainless steel and the dial has this minimalist design, just like the original.

The watch is powered by a Soprod P024, an automatic with roots within ETA and provides a power reserve of 38 hours. And on the dial you will read Aquamatic, which is Nivada-speak for Automatic and Water resistant. Ont he case back is a large gold medallion which is a tribute to the vintage Antarctic model. It depicts an airplane and an icebreaker under the stars, and a crescent moon with a mountain range and glacier in the distance.
