The Ulysse Nardin Classic Sonata is an extraordinary and complicated alarm watch. The Sonata line is not new for Ulysse Nardin but UN has streamlined its collection. So the Sonata is now part of the Classic line.

Looking at the Classic Sonata you will immediately see the two main complications. The most important one is at 1 o’clock: the alarm. You can set the alarm (and dual time as well) with the pushers an crowns. Switch the alarm on and at the adjusted alarm time a cathedral gong will chime out a melody.

Traditional mechanical alarm watches ring by means of a mainspring, tensioned to power a hammer striking on resounding parts. That can be a bell, a gong or the case of the watch itself. This one is more complex with a very long cathedral and an inertial oscillator that regulates the speed of the sounds. The alarm is synchronized with the dual time system when traveling. And inside the alarm sub-dial is the power-reserve indicator.

The 44-millimetres stainless steel case has the typical broad Ulysse Nardin shoulders, two crowns, two prominent pushers and a titanium bezel. Together with the blue and silver dial design it looks robust, technical and classic at the same time.

Inside there is Ulysse Nardins UN-67 automatic movement with a power-reserve of 42 hours. It has a lot of silicon components, including the hairspring, and there’s also UN’s special patented balance which is supposed to have better inertia.
