A makeover for your 30th birthday. A good or a bad thing? For the new TAG Heuer Link mostly good. Last year the women’s Link collection received an overhaul and now it is time for the men.

The TAG Heuer Link was introduced in 1987 as TAG Heuer S/el, derived from ‘Sports Elegance’. The model was available with automatic or quartz movements and kind of revived the brand after TAG acquired Heuer in the 1980s. You can read about the history of TAG Heuer here.

The S/el features the iconic stainless steel bracelet with the double S-shaped pieces. Although there are some models with leather strap. The TAG Heuer S/el became even more famous when the late Ayrton Senna wore it for his TAG Heuer advertisements. The S/el and Link are made in many variations and from 1999 the model is called TAG Heuer Link instead of TAG Heuer S/el.

This new one is a slight evolution, but still made entirely out of steel. The bracelet is totally integrated into the case, making horns unnecessary and providing a more fluid and ergonomic design. The finishes are a combination of polished and brushed on the case and bracelet.

The caliber 5 of the new TAG Heuer Link is based on the ETA 2824 movement

TAG Heuer Link watches were always powered by proven movements based on ETA calibers. For this new TAG Heuer Link the caliber 5 is used, which is like the ETA 2824. Nothing special, just hours, minutes, seconds and a date, but nearly flawless. A workhorse. TAG Heuer offers the Steel Link with three different dials: white, black and blue. Each one with baton shaped hour markers and steel hands, coated with super-luminova.

Despite being comfortable to wear, you really have to be a fan of the shiny Link bracelet. But, the case is especially nice. An interesting mix between a round and a cushion shaped one.

The new TAG Heuer Link is a perfectly fine watch. Good materials, a nice pedigree and a proven movement. In short: value for money. But if that is enough of an argument to buy a luxury accessory and something that really should warrant some level of emotion? That can be a serious point of discussion.
