Seiko is introducing the Seiko Prospex The 1965 Diver’s Re-creation ref. SJE093, a re-creation of the legendary Seiko 62MAS. The Seiko 62MAS (with reference 6217-8000) was the brand’s first dive watch, and created in 1965. The watch was designed by Taro Tanaka, it had a self-winding caliber 6217A and a water resistance up to 150 meters. This first Seiko diver proved its reliability during the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition, that took place from 1966 to 1969.

The new diver has an almost identical case size and thickness as the original one: 38 millimeters vs 37 millimeters and 12.5 millimeters vs 13 millimeters (both new vs old). Of course, the new one has been fully updated with a modern bezel and a grey sunburst dial. The hands are filled with lumibrite, as well as the applied hour markers. There is a date window at the 3 o’clock position, and next to it is a large screw-down crown. Together with the screwed case back it ensures this diver has a water resistance of 200 meters / 660 feet.

The Seiko Prospex The 1965 Diver’s Re-creation ref. SJE093 has a power reserve of 45 hours

Inside is the new Seiko caliber 6L37. Normally Seiko uses the 6L movements to be fitted in their thin dress watches, but they made adjustments in materials, construction, durability and shock resistance in order to meet their diver’s standards. It has a power reserve of 45 hours.

The Seiko Prospex The 1965 Diver’s Re-creation ref. SJE093 is fitted to a high-strength silicone strap, perfect for diving. On the case back there is an engraved dolphin as a reference to the original 62MAS, which had that too. The watch is limited to 1,965 pieces.
