According to Baume & Mercier the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe is the most iconic car in American motorsports. And therefor they launch the Baume & Mercier Clifton Club Shelby Cobra CSX2299 Limited Edition, fully inspired on that car. They even hired Peter Brock, a car designer who was responsible for the body of the 1964 Cobra. He is the co-designer of this time piece.
The Baume & Mercier Clifton Club Shelby Cobra CSX2299 houses a La Joux-Perret 8147-2 automatic movement with flyback chronograph. It is based on the ETA 7750 which is the base of a lot of other calibers. And it is used by brands like Baume & Mercier, Hamilton, Tissot, Certina and Chopard. Fine, proven technology, nothing new here. Let’s take a look at the design.
There is a lot to tell about Carroll Shelby and his cars. We’ll stick to the Daytona CSX2299, as this car debuted in 1964 and won its class at Le Mans in the same year. That was also the first victory of an American car at Le Mans. And they reached a speed of 196 mph (315 km/h) on the famous Mulsanne straight. So, this watch is limited to 196 pieces.

The first parallel between this Baume & Mercier Clifton Club Shelby Cobra CSX2299 and the Daytona is the color. Just like Shelby’s livery for the tail of the Daytona the dial of the watch is half blue and half silver-colored. On the tachymeter scale on the outer ring of the dial the 196 mph-achievement is highlighted in red. The Chronograph pushers are shaped like the foot pedals of the Daytona, and the case band has the Cobra insignia from the engine (which is the Cobra 289, in case you like to know). The red chronograph seconds hand features the Cobra logo and the hours and minutes hands are shaped as the steering wheel. More or less.
Another nice detail: the case back is shaped like the Daytona wheels. The shape of apertures on the back plate creates this wheel effect and shows the oscillating weight. To complete the Shelby Cobra Daytona feeling the strap is blue “automotive carbon-like” calfskin with black rubberized soft-touch calfskin lining and red stitching. And the packaging includes an exclusive 1:43 scale model of the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe with an original card signed by Peter Brock himself.
