The Angelus U40 Racing Tourbillon Skeleton is the latest model from the revived Swiss brand Angelus. Back in 1891 the brothers Albert and Gustav Stolz founded the Angelus Fabrique d’horlogerie in Le Locle, Switzerland.

The company became renowned for developing and manufacturing movements and timepieces, both for itself and for other brands. In the early 1980s the company ceased operations as they could not keep up with the competition due to the introduction of quartz movements in the 1970s.

The Angelus A-300 caliber and skeleton construction

However, in 2015 they woke up from a long sleep. A new management, new ideas, new models. The Angelus U40 Racing Tourbillon Skeleton shows their capabilities. Inside is a fully in-house developed caliber (A-300), a mechanical hand-winder. The skeleton is also complete designed and produced in-house. It is not a kind of cut-out version of an existing model but from the beginning it was designed to be a skeleton. It is a fascinating three-dimensional sculpture with six-spoke design bits.

The A-300 caliber of the Angelus U40 Racing Tourbillon Skeleton is completely developed by Angelus

Although you might think a skeleton needs to be big, it is only 42 millimeters in diameter. Which is good, and subtle. The case is made from grade 5 titanium and is only 10 millimeters thick. Of course it has a see-through back. The U40 is available in two versions: one with red tips at the end of the big hands and one with white tips. Both models come with a rubber strap.
