The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Gold is a re-edition of a 1960s model and marks the Carrera’s 60^th anniversary. In 1960 the Carrera Chronograph in gold was launched, with reference 1158 CHN. It is also known as the driver’s watch, and it was made exclusively for Ferrari drivers. Heuer was one of the biggest sponsors of the Italian team at the time and gave away gold copies of his watches to drivers. Which was great marketing of course. On the photo’s below you can see the one that belonged to Formula One driver Ronnie Peterson, with a personal message from Jack Heuer on the back.

But let’s look at the new chronograph. It is dressed in a full 18K 3N solid yellow gold case, 1 millimeter bigger than the original. It measures 39 millimeters with a thickness of 13.9 millimeters. The watch has the classic round case together with gold round pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock, as well as a yellow gold standard crown. Here on the right, the original has the crown on the left.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Gold has a power reserve of 80 hours

It features a yellow gold-plated vertical brushed dial with chronograph layout and black azuré sub dials. The hour and minute hands are made of yellow gold with a white super-luminova. It’s all close to the original, however that model has a vertical band on the dial. The domed sapphire has curved edges, a glassbox design, just like all new Carrera’s. The watch comes on a perforated black calfskin leather racing strap with a fine-brushed, polished 18k 3N yellow gold pin buckle.

Inside the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Gold is the caliber TH20-00 with a power reserve of 80 hours. For sure it drives the chronograph, as well as a small date at 6 o’clock. Not a fan of shiny gold, take a look at the other Carrera’s from TAG Heuer’s new collection.
