The IWC Aquatimer has reached a milestone. The watch was introduced in 1967 and now celebrates its 50th anniversary with the IWC Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month Edition 50 Years Aquatimer.

The Aquatimer originated in a time when diving with scuba tanks gained popularity. With the first Aquatimer introduced in 1967 it had a water-resistance up to 200 meters and an internal rotating bezel for setting the dive time. This watch established a tradition of diver’s watches from Schaffhausen.

And for the 50th anniversary there has to be something special. And as IWC is a pioneer with materials – they had a pioneering role in the use if ceramic and titanium in the 80’s – this Aquatimer introduces Ceratanium for the first time as a case material.

The IWC Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month Edition 50 Years Aquatimer is limited to 50 pieces

Ceratanium sounds like something out of science-fiction but it is IWC’s own blend of titanium and ceramic. This results in a case that is as hard and wear resistant as ceramic and also as light and unbreakable as titanium. A composite they worked on for more than five years.

Quite impressive, almost so that you would forget the digital perpetual calendar powered by IWC’s own 89802 movement. This displays the date and month in large numerals in the style of a digital watch. And it automatically recognizes different month lengths and leap years. The chronograph with flyback function displays stop times, combined in a totalizer at the 12 o’clock position.

The IWC Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month Edition 50 Years Aquatimer is limited to 50 pieces and comes on a black rubber strap. One that can be simply replaced via IWC’s patented quick-change system.
