Perhaps not as well-known as the major Swiss brands, but Urban Jürgensen is a brand that is highly regarded among connoisseurs. A brand that can be traced back to 1745. The Jürgensen dynasty ended in 1912, but returned in 2014. Still using historical horological techniques, like with the Urban Jürgensen Reference 1741.

The dial of the watch deserves an extra look as it is equipped with a Grenage dial. A first in more than 100 years. The brand reintroduces the almost forgotten craft, which is hardly used or even known today. Handcrafted, delicate and time-consuming. The result is a frosty silvery surface with a unique granular look. It does not end there, the moon disk for example takes more than 20 different operations to create.

The Reference 1741 is powered by the Urban Jürgensen P4 in-house movement, which is the base. Additionally, it features a perpetual calendar, leap year indicator and moon phase.

The watch is housed in a traditional Urban Jürgensen teardrop lug case. This time around in platinum. The profile of convex and concave curves of the case consists of three main pieces; the middle case with individually soldered teardrop lugs, the top bezel houses the domed sapphire crystal, and the screw back with a flat sapphire crystal.

The Urban Jürgensen Reference 1741 comes on a black, brown or blue alligator strap with platinum buckle. The reference 1741 commands a hefty price of CHF 91’200, which could be a bit much for a watch that only the real watch aficionado’s will truly appreciate. Nevertheless, an impressive piece of horological art that keeps some rarely used techniques fully alive.
